WA - Drawing People

 I started off the afternoon with a demo, but....a bit different.....a paint-along-a-Sharon sort of thing.

I hadn't thought it through properly because there was a problem with everyone seeing the model and my drawing! We got there in the end. So my aim was to show how to portray a head with  volume and structure.

Thank you to the members who sat for us...very brave.....it is not an easy thing to do.

Made a start on another SP! Happy so far, but I saturated it with fixative, which ran, 8( , and meant I had to leave it until completely dry.

So I did this..........

Neither are 'loose' enough, there is no movement or life or soul! I need to work from the mirror rather than a photo, I think.

Tiddling ...again.

Tiddled this, but not finished as I've run out of fixative. I love working with charcoal, rubbing, scraping, scratching, layer upon layer, until I get the desired result.

So I blocked in the next project, a portrait of Stan, who happens to be the husband of the previous lady, Merle.  Not good....yet!

A re-visit. I painted this back in 2009, see here, and I had forgotten that I had drawn her in charcoal before, see here. I like her with more space around her....if only I had looked back before I started. I am happy though with the afternoons' work.

Boy Busker 12" x 16" Charcoal

I have decided that two of the pictures I wanted to submit to Hertford are way too big to manage on the train. If I take the car it means that Roy would be grounded...not fair. So I did this, which is a much more managable size! And it is all framed and ready to go!

 

I also tiddled this again, but I fear you would be hard pressed to see what I did. I'm happier though. Roy thinks it looks like I have had a stroke so maybe I shall be tiddling some more and putting in the other eye! What say you?

I really like this image of my niece, Kathryn, jumping on a trampoline....but I just love what I have done with it! And enjoyed doing it too. There is something free-er and more expressive about charcoal that I don't feel with any other medium.

WA - Hat

 

SP with Scarf  16" x 20"  Oil

 

Ise a bin mostly tiddlin'! The above face was a wipeoff, so I took it along to the WA, as the brief was 'hat', which this is, sort of,....um..... in high hopes of making a good portrait. I got in a right pickle taking off my specs to see what I was painting! Then an intelligent member of the group suggested I paint said specs and....voila! I have to recommend it as an easy way to paint eyes.....must get a better likeness though, tomorrow.

Was tiddling this yesterday, in the absence of inspiration, but I am really enjoying charcoal again and so maybe will do more.
