Watercolour Orchids....or Not!

The plan was to paint purple orchids, in watercolour, as a gift for my niece. Well, what happened there then!
I might see how they look in oils tomorrow.

Sharon, I think the second and third ones work nicely...son't you? What kind of paper are you using? What is it you don't like and would want to change if you did them over again?

Hi, Maggie, thanks for the comment. You made me look again, but really they are nothing like what was in my head. My paper is Daler Rowney 250g, and I would like to see a wider tonal range, more colours, and looser!
I seem to have lost your email, sorry, flipping hacker!

I think they look really nice Sharon even if they have not turned out quite as you were expecting. This has happened to me before ... all too often. Sometimes it helps to walk away for a day or two and go back for a little tweaking. :)

I'll be watching for the oil version---though I think these are pretty darn nice!

Sharon, if you get a chance, try Arches 300gsm Not paper.....it is so nice to work on. Consider adding a light touch of water to the outside edges of some of the petals/and or the stem...not all over...just here and there while the painting is still wet so that the paint bleeds out a little. This will give a looser appearance and feel, while still retaining some of the hard line edges. You could also consider masking out the white of the paper petal shapes, and working on the background first in a loose 'drop in washes' type of way...then work on the petals when the background is dry, keeping everything loose....

Maggie, I thank you for your suggestions, which I will try. I agree about the Arches paper, I have used it before...can you paint on both sides?

Maggie's comments are very helpful to me as well. Watercolours are a real mystery but I hope to learn soon. I would be happy with these, flowers are so difficult. I'll be looking out for the oil one too.
