 FALL 9.5" x 13"  Watercolour
With 'Autumn' the topic today, I played with leaves and had a very nice afternoon. The only planning was to take just watercolours so I couldn't bottle it again! I'm happy with this, but I'm wondering how to get a dark background instead of light....too scary. Perhaps not.
Oh, and lovely, scrummy cakes made by the fair Jacqui!

Hi Sharon. Watercolour painting, good friends and cake - now what could be better? Lovely painting with all those autumnal colours. As for your fear of dark backgrounds, I'd say just try a few mixes of complementary pigments, especially those that granulate, to see what you like best. I like Phthalo Turquoise and Cadmium Red or Cobalt Blue and Burnt Umber, not black but atmospheric darks.

Lovely autumn painting, Sharon!
I'm glad I'm not the only one with a dark background phobia! Just had some struggles with that this afternoon.

Sharon it's lovely. It reminds me of leaves stuck to a wet window after a storm.

Sharon, this is lovely just the way it is. I personally think it would be very difficult to paint a dark background without loosing some of the lovely textural effects you have going on. You could try another one, and either paint the background first around the leaf shapes, or mask out the shapes and be bold with a dark background and lots of splattering and texture....then take of the mask and paint the leaves. Just turn the session into a fun time....and not worry about how it will turn out..You'll have fun. Glad you didn't bottle it!

I think the light bg helps it sing!

I love this - the colours and effects. Not sure if a black background would spoil it. Not being a watercolourist myself I suppose just experimenting would help.
